1953-1954 (MARS 366.1), North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, NC, USA.
Collection Overview
Correspondence, press releases, and reports comprising the bulk of Governor Umstead's
executive papers, relating to all facets of the operations of the governor's office,
state government, and issues before the governor. Correspondents include the general
public, state agency and commission officials, political organizations, and federal
agency officials. Generally carbon copies from the governor or his private secretary
are attached to incoming correspondence. Although there is a separate series of press
releases, short speeches, and proclamations, these may also appear attached to letters
in various subject files in this series. Larger files include the Dept. of Justice
file on segregation and a subject file on the United States Supreme Court decision
in Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. Much of this correspondence
includes constituent letters and signature petitions to the governor regarding the
decision. Other subjects of interest include the Fiftieth Anniversary of Powered Flight;
the opening of the New State Fair Arena (Dorton Arena); and educational television
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Arrangement Note
Chronological, then alphabetical by agency or subject.
