Biographical/Historical note
William B. Umstead was born in Bahama North Carolina on May 13, 1895. A 1916 graduate
of University of North Carolina, Umstead fought in World War I then studied law at
Trinity College upon his return home. Umstead began his career practicing law in Durham
county, and later served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate.
In 1952 he was elected governor, where he served until his death in 1954.
