Abstract

John Ehle was raised in Asheville, N.C., the son of an insurance company division director. He served in World War II as a rifleman, earned his B.A. and M.A. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and taught at the university for ten years. During his college years he wrote plays for the American Adventure series on NBC Radio. He went on to write seventeen books, including both fiction and non-fiction works.
Ehle served as Special Assistant to the Governor for Educational and Cultural Affairs during Governor Terry Sanford's administration. These records are principally the correspondence and papers of Mr. Ehle and his office during the the period from 1961-1964. The records reflect initiatives in several progressive educational programs, including the North Carolina School for the Performing Arts, the Governor's School for Gifted High School Students, the Institute of Outdoor Drama, and other programs.

John Ehle was raised in Asheville, N.C., the son of an insurance company division director. He later served on both the White House Group for Domestic Affairs and on the First National Council of the Humanities and helped begin the North Carolina Film Board, North Carolina Institute of Outdoor Drama, the North Carolina Advancement School and the North Carolina School of Science and Math.
