Finding Aid of the HandMade in America Records, ORG.7002
Abstract
Handmade in America was established in 1995 "to grow the economy through craft, cultural
heritage and the community assets of western North Carolina." Initiated to increase
interest in local crafts, to provide assistance and economic venues for local crafters,
and to stimulate the economy, the organization provided workshops, created an artist
registry, and connected artists and crafters with galleries and shops.
The collection consists of minutes, clippings, photographs, and grant and project
files documenting the non-profit organization and its administration, fundraising,
and services.

Biographical/Historical
During its 22-year history, Handmade in America had several community-based projects that aided in establishing new creative energy and provided economic development opportunities in western North Carolina. Some of the successful programs were Small Town Revitalization, the publication of guidebooks, and ; Buy Handmade, which connected local artisans with retailers; Craft Across Curriculum, that brought craft to students and educators; and Appalachian Women Entrepreneurs, which provided resources and support for female business owners.
The organization experienced growing pains early on. Upon the advice of an outside consultant, the board was restructured, and new adjunct organizations were created under Handmade in America, as a means to generate income for the organization's sustainability. These included the Handmade in America Foundation, Handmade in America Services, Inc.; and Handmade in America Community Development Corporation (CDC). In 2002, the Services Division ceased operations and its assets and projects were absorbed by the CDC.
By the early 2000s, Handmade in America was so successful that requests for consultations, speaking engagements, and workshops grew significantly and impacted the organization's workflow. Handmade Institute was created to provide consultations and instruction on the Handmade in America model. This allowed western North Carolina to be seen as the center of handmade craft in the country and would further bolster the region's prestige as a national leader in creating craft economies.
In its final years, changing economic and political conditions caused Handmade in America to experience budgetary shortfalls. The organization ceased operations in 2015 when a shift in state funding made it impossible for Handmade in America to maintain its level of service.
