Collection Overview
Richard H. Bacot's letters describe military operations in and around Kinston, N. C., during 1864 and early 1865. The first letter predates his assignment to and describes the January, 1864, attack upon the Union forces at New Bern. The remainder of the correspondence tells the construction of (as he termed it), grounding of the ship on a sandbar and its later refloating, prospects for winning the war, departure of troops from Kinston, destruction of , and the 1865 campaign in North Carolina (Wilmington, Bentonville, and Goldsboro). Other subjects of interest include social activities in and around Kinston; family news; and the discovery of the a subversive organization made up of followers of W. W. Holden.
Typescript copies of the letters have been prepared, and they are filed with the originals in the collection.
