Collection Overview
This collection consists of the papers of Norden, native of Sweden, Wilmington resident,
and civil engineer specializing in land surveying and title research in southeastern
North Carolina for lumber companies, development companies, and the N.C. Department
of Public Instruction, perfecting titles to swamp lands owned by the department. There
are a large number of title abstracts and related papers; some original land papers
from Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties (1782-1940); and
copies of land records, court records, and a few wills from these and other counties.
His papers as state agent for public lands include correspondence with superintendents
of public instruction, and copies of reports by him and his predecessors (1827-1934).
Many papers relate to a suit brought by Norden against the Board of Education (1935-1941)
about his contract. Papers include report on truck farming near Wilmington (1904);
letters from Norden on trip to midwest advertising for immigrant settlers (1905);
papers about proposed railways between Wilmington and the beach (1888-1913); and prospectus
for development company in Duplin and Pender counties (1921). For the Atlantic Coast
Line Railroad there are appraisal reports on land in North Carolina, Georgia, and
Florida (1918-1920), and surveys in Brunswick and Columbus counties (n.d.). Also reports
on South Carolina timber proposals (1910-1912); correspondence with Cooper River Timber
Company (1922-1938) and with N.C. Department of Conservation and Development; and
letters and material about Inland Waterway, Croatan National Forest, and a proposed
Cape Fear national forest. Personal letters and papers of Norden and wife relate to
family in Sweden and Wisconsin, with many letters in Swedish (1892-1917); and to interests
such as rare books and North Carolina history. Diaries (1906, 1927-1946) contain brief
entries, chiefly about his work. Correspondents include A. T. Allen, A. B. Andrews,
Samuel A. Ashe, Josiah W. Bailey, E. C. Brooks, R. D. W. Connor, J. C. B. Ehringhaus
(1933), and Clyde A. Erwin. Norden's maps and survey plats (ca. 200 originals and
tracings) are housed with the Map Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina.

1. Miscellaneous Maps, 1740-1944, undated
Collection Overview Scope and Content:
These are map of surveys, mostly in eastern North Carolina, conducted by Eric Norden
(1869-1946) either in his capacity as Engineer in Land Matters for the State Board
of Education or for clients as a consulting engineer in private practice. Others are
maps collected or copied by Norden as reference tools for his work. The majority of
the plats are drawn on linen, but there are few Van Dyke and blue line prints. The
plats are first grouped by the county in which the land is located, and then alphabetically
by place name. A printed guide to the maps in the Eric Norden Collection is available
for use in the Archives Search Room. Titles of these maps in MARS may differ from
the titles that appear in the printed guide to the Norden Collection and to those
duplicates also found in the State Board of Education Plat Book 1.
