Abstract

Frances Lewis Arthur McDowell (1915 - 1998) was an active resident of Buncombe County, involved in the local community especially the restoration of the Smith-McDowell House in Asheville. She worked for the Veteran's Administration hospital in Oteen from 1945 to 1973.

This collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks and genealogical notes compiled by Mrs. McDowell.

Biographical/Historical

Frances Lewis Arthur McDowell (1915 - 1998) was born and reared in Asheville. She graduated from Asheville High School in 1932 and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church for 71 years. Early in her career Frances was involved with the Business Girl's League of the Asheville Y.W.C.A. She was employed by the Veteran's Administration hospital in Oteen from 1945 to 1973, retiring as a fiscal accounts supervisor.

She is descended from two North Carolina Revolutionary War soldiers and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In 1955, she married Mr. Edward Erwin McDowell (1913 - 1988) of Asheville. They lived on Forest Hills Drive in Asheville's Kenilworth neighborhood, before retiring to Givens Estates.
