Collection Overview

This collection, created by John Palmer during his tenure at Haywood Community College, provides an account of the campus arboretum's creation and expansion from the perspective of its director. Numerous campus projects were brought to fruition by Palmer, from landscaping to building, as his input was frequently sought by administration as well as the student body. Palmer procured funds through grants and donations, and also material donations such as the mill stone and water wheel for the Millhouse building project. Additionally, Palmer was an educator, teaching dendrology and forestry as an adjunct instructor as a result of his own education, experience, and credentials within that discipline. The components of student work programs, annual out-of-state field trips, related conferences, club organizations, and overseas correspondence and travel notes provide insight with regard to the administrative and teaching dimensions of Palmer's lengthy career.

Biographical/Historical

Haywood Community College, as it is now known, was opened in 1965 as Haywood Industrial Education Center, and later as Haywood Technical College. Financial gifts and donations from the late A. L. Freedlander allowed the campus to greatly expand its physical presence and educational mission. Freedlander also procured and donated numerous objects for the creation of the Mill House project, and was a vibrant supporter of landscaping and building projects. Although Freedlander's gifts were relatively unrestricted, he asked Haywood Community College's president and board members to ensure the expanding campus would be properly landscaped, focusing on beautification, rhododendron cultivation, and the creation of a dahlia garden. He wanted the campus to fit into its natural surroundings and asked that a campus arboretum be created and maintained.

Haywood Community College is located in the town of Clyde, in Haywood County, North Carolina. It provides education and training in more than 50 curricula with a student body of more than 3,000 students.
