Biographical/Historical

Sidney Edgar Rochelle, b. 1876, served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American war. Upon his return to Durham, North Carolina he worked at his father's fish stand before starting work at a repair shop on Main Street operated by H. A. Gaskins. After working with Gaskins for several years, Rochelle opened his own bicycle shop at 202 North Corcoran Street in 1913. Shortly thereafter in 1916 his shop moved to 208 N. Mangum Street where it would remain for the next 30 years. Rochelle was the first distributor of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles in North Carolina and organized many early motorcycle clubs that would frequently travel throughout the United States. He also organized bicycle outings for area children. The business closed upon Rochelle's retirement in 1946.
