Terry Sanford's Education Tour, 1962, State Archives of North Carolina, Raleigh, NC,
USA.
Collection Overview
The 247 photographs in this collection are 5x7 black and white prints taken by Lt.
Lloyd Burchett of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The collection was donated by
Raymond Stone, Governor Sanford's assistant and a State Board of Education employee
who was responsible for setting up the education speaking engagements and meetings,
and was integrally involved in the Citizens Committee for Better Schools. Stone collected
the photographs and donated them to the Division of Archives and History on December
2, 2008.
During his administration, Governor Sanford pushed for a great deal of reform, particularly
in areas of race reform and education. His progressive ideals caught the attention
of President Kennedy and many others, and he was regarded as the standard bearer of
a new political ideal. Sanford asserted that education was the key to progress, and
pushed forth a number of progressive education reforms, such as greater support for
the UNC system, consolidation of the North Carolina Community College system, and
the integration of North Carolina's public primary schools. The photographs in the
collection span January to the end of September, 1962 covering a tour promoting school
integration. Generally they depict Governor Sanford speaking in school gymnasiums
or cafeterias and interacting with schoolchildren and local dignitaries.
Arrangement Note
The collection is arranged in chronological order beginning 27 January 1962 through
28 September 1962. The bulk of collection includes photos from the months of March
and September. As much as possible, the prints have been arranged within the order
of the schools visited on the daily level according the itineraries. There are 34
prints that are unidentified by date or location. These unidentified prints have been
separated as a second series.
Biographical/Historical note
James Terry Sanford was born August 20, 1917. He was an Eagle Scout, fought in World
War Two at the Battle of the Bulge, and received his law degree from the University
of North Carolina. A political ally of John F. Kennedy, in 1960 he won the governor's
race for North Carolina on a moderate platform. As governor, Terry Sanford fought
for the desegregation of North Carolina schools, and helped expand the Research Triangle
Park in the Raleigh-Durham area which helped boost the state's economy. After his
term he opened a law practice. In 1969 he became President of Duke University, a post
he held until 1985. Terry Sanford made two unsuccessful bids to be the Democratic
Presidential nominee in the 1970s. In 1986 he was elected to United States Senate
where he served until defeated by Lauch Faircloth in 1992. Sanford died on April 18,
1998 of esophageal cancer. In 1962 Governor Terry Sanford launched a tour around North Carolina schools to promote
integration. Photographs of that tour were taken by Lt. Lloyd Burchett of the North
Carolina Highway Patrol, who served both as Governor Sanford's chauffeur and photographer.
