Collection Overview
The collection consists of portraits of individuals from throughout North Carolina
(many of Raleigh) and other states, as well as two from Shanghai, China. The 57 identified
portraits are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the subject. There are 26
photographs of unidentified individuals arranged at the end of the collection. Included
in the collection are such prominent North Carolina names as Alderman, Badger, Fowle,
Haywood, Holt, Latta, Marshall, Stagg, Heck, Pou, Boylan, Ruffin and others. This
collection would be of special interest to those researching North Carolina photographers
during the late 19th century. The following North Carolina photographers are represented
in the collection; E. A. Alderman (Greensboro), Henry Bumgarten (Charlotte), Henry
Cronenberg (Wilmington), A. J. Gallagher (Rutherfordton), R. H. Maynard (Hickory),
George W. Swift (Raleigh), James H. Van Ness (Charlotte), Cyrus P. Wharton (Raleigh),
Yates (Wilmington), William H. Zoeller (Elizabeth City). This collection would also
be of special interest to those conducting genealogical research on influential Raleigh,
NC families in the 1880s and 90s in particular.
This collection consists mainly of cabinet cards, a form of portraiture photography
seen from the mid 1860s to the 1920s with the height of popularity being approximately
1870-1900. Many, if not most, of these photographs have the name and location of the
photography studio responsible for its production printed on lower edge and/or back
of the print. Traditionally, a cabinet card is a 4"x5.5" albumen or silver gelatin
photographic print mounted on a 4.25"x6.5"piece of pre-printed, and later embossed,
card stock. These cards were given to friends and family and often displayed in cabinets.
Highlights of this collection include:
PhC.19.58-A portrait of Dallas T. Ward, the man responsible for making and delivering
the truce flag for the surrender of Raleigh to General Sherman in April of 1865.
PhC.19.51-An 1890s portrait of Mattie Pace Fuller (1879-1953) and Maj. William (Willie)
Heck Pace (1883-1940). Grandchildren of Jonathan McGee and Mattie Anna Callendine
Heck and born in the Heck-Andrews House located at 309 N. Blount Street in Raleigh,
NC.
PhC.19.04-Small diamond shaped card photograph of Miss Josephine Englehard (Boylan)
Van Patten at age 4-5, granddaughter of William Montfort Boylan (1852-1915), builder
of Montfort Hall in Raleigh. Her father was partly responsible for the selling of
the large parcel of land that would later become Boylan Heights, an early subdivision
in Raleigh, NC.
PhC.19.02-Portrait of Sherwood Badger (18 September 1844 - 22 May 1912) born to Delia
and George Edmund Badger -- U.S. senator and secretary of the Navy.
-Many well preserved, dated cabinet cards from the late 1880s to middle 1890s. This
collection can be a reliable resource in dating other undated cabinet cards and card
photographs.
Arrangement Note
This collection is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the subject. Unidentified
individuals are located at the back.
Biographical/Historical
Richard Beverly Raney "Bev" Webb was born in Raleigh on Aug. 8, 1934, the second son
of James and Margaret Denson Raney Webb of Hillsborough. He was educated at public
schools in Hillsborough and graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va.,
cum laude. He received his BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill in 1956 and his LLB from Yale University in 1959. At Chapel Hill, he was a member
of The Order of the Golden Fleece, The Order of the Holy Grail, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha
Tau Omega and Aardvark Abbey and was elected Permanent Class President.
After graduating from law school, he served with the North Carolina Air National Guard
and joined the Charlotte Law firm of Lassiter, Moore and Van Allen (now Moore and
Van Allen) in 1960, where he served as partner in the commercial real estate section
of the firm until his retirement. While in Charlotte, Webb was a long-time member
and then-chair of the board of directors of the Charlotte Symphony, and a member of
the Board of the Charlotte Nature Museum (Discovery Place).
Webb was married to the former Katherine Forsyth Wolf (the artist and creator K. Wolf-Webb),
had three sons Richard B. R. (Bo) Webb. Jr., John Bradley Howard (John) Webb of Fredericksburg,
Va., and James (Jim) Webb, II of Washington, D.C.
In 1989, Webb moved to Hillsborough, where he continued his practice in the Raleigh
and Durham offices of the law firm and where his wife Katherine, created, developed
and managed the Hillsborough House Inn, a bed and breakfast inn, in their home, an
old family house known as Belle Vue.
Webb's interest in history, families and architecture merged into his long-time work
with historic preservation. In Charlotte, he was a member and then-chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Historic Preservation Commission. He was for many years a member and then chair of
the Board of Preservation North Carolina. He was also a member of numerous preservation
organizations and projects in Hillsborough, Durham, Edenton and Wilmington, including
the Hillsborough Preservation Society and the first Board of the Bellamy Mansion in
Wilmington and a founder of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough.
He was particularly pleased with being able, through the generosity of the James M.
Johnston Trust and others, to acquire the race track and adjoining lands in Hillsborough
from the families who had developed there the first dirt stock car racing track. This
land was conveyed to Preservation North Carolina and subsequently to Mr. Richard Jenrette
to become the view shed and a part of Ayr Mount in Hillsborough.
Webb was a former member of the Charlotte Country Club and was also a member of The
Society of Cincinnati and the North Caroliniana Society, and he was recently appointed
a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Marine Sciences at the University
of North Carolina at Wilmington.
