Collection Overview
This collection consists of portraits and group photos of members of the Badger and
associated families of Raleigh and Wake County, NC, c. 1870-1910. The collection includes
both identified and unidentified members of the Badger, Hogg, Manly, Bryan, Lee, Young,
and other related families as well as formal class portraits of Trinity College, University
of North Carolina, and possibly Wake Forest University students. Photos are cabinet
cards, cartes de visites, and other card photo types including a Paris Panel (quite
rare), and some early snapshots pasted into a small Kodak album. The persons identified
in the cabinet cards and card photographs are arranged alphabetically by the surname
of the subject. The seven unidentified items in which a surname was not found are
located at the end (back) of the collection.
It has been determined that the collection was largely, if not completely, collected
by Eleanor Hawkins (Bryan) Badger (1847-1939) of Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Badger, wife of
Thomas Badger (1843-1911), bore four children; George, Katherine, Janet and Thomas.
The collection also consists of many nieces and nephews (some distant), friends, and
a small collection of formal school portraits, made by the Durham, NC studio of Cole
and Holladay. These school portraits depict students from Trinity College, University
of North Carolina and possibly Wake Forest University. The inscriptions on the photographs
suggest that Eleanor was a well-liked and well-known member of the family. The children
of William Hamilton Young and Elizabeth (Lillie) Gray Bryan Young (PhC.211.33) are
well represented as well as the children of Malcolm Gray Manly and Annie Manly. Printed
family tree documents are enclosed. Family members seen on the family tree that are
also depicted in the collection are referred to by their respective call numbers.
The unidentified items in the collection include several card photographs, a Carte
de Visite, an early Kodak Photo album and cabinet cards (including a larger cabinet
card type item labeled as a "Paris Panel"). Research on the well-preserved Kodak photo
album revealed that the album was first offered in for sale in the Kodak catalog in
1908, thereby dating the photos to around this time period. The 25 page album contains
eight photos depicting candid individual and group shots in what appears to be a rural
coastal area. Several of the photographs have an unidentified residence in the background.
It is believed that the cabinet cards, card photographs and paper photographs in this
collection were originally part of a larger collection, some of which were sold by
the donor prior to the donation.
Arrangement Note
This collection is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the subject.
