Collection Overview

Photographs depicting Edwin Maurice Gill and family members dating 1900 to 1950. Gill was born in Laurinburg, NC, 20 July 1899. He served in the General Assembly in 1929 and 1931 and was private secretary to Governor O. Max Gardner, 1931-1933. He was Commissioner of Paroles, 1933-1942; Commissioner of Revenue, 1942-1949; and Collector of Internal Revenue, 1950-1953. He was elected State Treasurer in 1953, an office he held until his retirement in 1977. Gill passed away in 1978. These photos were given to the donor, Chuck Bowen, in 1977 by Sara D. Gill, wife of Edwin Gill's brother Emmet for use in a television documentary Bowen wrote and directed. The show was one of many Bowen made documenting the lives of historically significant North Carolinians, and it was narrated by Andy Griffith. Bowen no longer recalls the exact title of the piece but it was likely "Edwin Gill: a great North Carolinian" or something similar. An extant copy has been sought out, but as of December 2017, has not been located. Gill family members depicted in the photos include Edwin Gill's parents Thomas Jefferies and Mamie North Gill; sisters Emma Washington, Grace Gill and Louise Gill; brothers Thomas J. Gill and Emmet Gill; Mrs. Thomas J. Gill; Gill's niece Dr. Mary Gill Clarke; nephew Thomas Jeffries Gill III; Edwin Maurice Gill as a child, young adult and grown; and Gill's dog Sport. Also included in the collection is a letter dated 18 March 1977 from Sara Gill to Chuck Bowen describing the photos.
