Collection Overview
The collection consists of 319 photographs that belonged to Ruth Strickland Baucom
and includes a photo album, loose photos and an obituary card. The album is composed
of numerous family related snap shots most of which are identified by brief captions
beneath the pictures. Many of the images are of scenic views while on vacation in
North Carolina, particularly the mountains. Some of the identified locations are Barnardsville,
Kenilworth (now part of Asheville), Newland, and Lake Waccamaw. Also, there are photos
taken of historic sites in Edenton, the State Capitol in Raleigh, and of students
at Wake Forest College. A good number of the photographs appear to have been taken
in the Franklin County area near the Strickland's home.
The loose photographs are older than the snapshots in and associated with the album
and are mostly portraits. Few of the individuals are identified, but the name and
location of the photographer are often present. Many of these photographs were made
in Raleigh by Cyrus P. Wharton and in Oxford by W. F. Washington. There is one photo
of an unidentified family and their homeplace taken by a Washington, North Carolina,
photographer. Paul Strickland lived in Cuba during the early 1920s and worked as a
bookkeeper for a power company that installed power lines there; three of the loose
pictures were shot there. Also, the collection includes an elevated view of the town
of Barnardsville in Buncombe County. Lastly, there is a death notice card in memory
of Mrs. Wiley G. Riddick who died September 16, 1900, age 64 years, 7 days.
Arrangement Note
The collection begins with the photograph album. Photographs that had come loose from
the album and were simply tucked into the front of the album are at the beginning
followed by the album itself. Where possible photographs were left in the album because
they were glued in and removal would have greatly damaged the pictures. Also, keeping
the album intact preserves an example of an early 20th century photo album. Removal
also would have destroyed the owner's unique organization and identification of the
images. A series of loose photos that were never in or associated with the album follow.
These loose photos are arranged primarily in chronological order with the portraits
first and the few non-portraits placed at the end.
