Collection Overview
About half of the cards are views of various cities and towns and the other half consists of scenes and points of interest in the mountains of the western part of North Carolina. The majority of postcards in the collection date between 1920 and 1950. A few date back to the early part of this century (c. 1905-1920) and several are as recent as the 1960s.
Forty of the cards are the accordion folder type, which have about 12 views each. Like the single view cards, approximately one half (21) are of different cities and towns, and the remainder (19) are of mountain areas.
There are many duplicates in the collection. Some of these contain slight differences, and all variants were retained. Many of the duplicate cards are filed under different categories, for example, some of the cards under Lake Lure show Chimney Rock and vice versa. Some of the cards in the People category are duplicated in some of the geographic categories, as are cards featuring structures.
