Collection Overview

This collection of negatives depicts the Surry Parker family and business enterprises in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, c. 1904-1920s. Parker's logging and machinery operation in the 1910's in Pinetown, North Carolina is depicted along with views of his business interests in Virginia, including the Surry Parker Machine Works at Norfolk. Parker designed and built logging machinery. Many of the images depict Parker's relatives vacationing in the Virginia Beach area. Also in the collection is a copy of a daguerreotype of Captain George Thomas Parker, the father of Surry Parker, in his Confederate uniform.

(NOTE: The Parker family's handwritten notes on the collection give added detail to many folios. The notes may be found at the end of the collection. The orginal negative album also may be found with the collection.)

Arrangement Note

The collection is arranged in the original order of negatives in the album. They are organized into folios, and the folders contain the identical numbers of the folios in the album.

Biographical/Historical note

Surry Parker (1866-1942) was a designer and builder of steam logging machinery and founder of Pinetown.
