    This collection contains signed portraits of Clyde Rourk Hoey and Franklin Wills Hancock, Jr. Ben V. Matthews took the photograph of Hancock.

    Biographical/Historical note

    Clyde Roark Hoey (1877-1945) studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was admitted to the bar in 1899. Hoey served in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1919 to 1921. From 1937 to 1941 he served as Governor of North Carolina. Hoey was elected to the U. S. Senate in 1944 and served until his death in 1945. Franklin Wills Hancock, Jr. (1894-1969) was admitted to the bar in 1916 and practiced in Oxford. Hancock served in the N. C. State Senate from 1926 to 1928 and in the N. C. House from 1928 to 1930. He served in the U. S. House of Representatives, representing North Carolina's fifth district from 1930 to 1939.

    E. Stuart Powell, Jr., 1506 Hillsborough Street, P. O. Box 10097, Raleigh, North Carolina 27605 donated the photographs to the State Archives on November 4, 1997. The portraits were accessioned in November, 1997.
