Biographical/Historical

Raleigh High School was organized in 1905 with Hugh Morson as Principal. The school was located at 113 West Morgan Street between the municipal water tower and First Presbyterian Church. The school was prepared for its first class of approximately 300 students in 1907. In 1924 a larger High School was built nearby on New Bern Avenue and in 1925 posthumously named in honor of Hugh Morson. The existing Murphey school, 443 North Person Street, was built in 1916 after a fire burned the wooden school in the summer of 1914. The plate in this collection was created prior to the 1914 fire as a wooden structure is clearly seen in background.
