Collection Overview

Collection consists of seven (7) 5x7 dry plate glass negatives produced c. 1912 of school groups located in Wilson and Durham, North Carolina. The first set contains three (3) images depicting class portraits from Wilson Graded School in Wilson, North Carolina. Grades 4, 8 and 9 are shown. Students are seen sitting on stone steps. The second set contains four (4) images depicting class portraits from West Durham Graded School. Grades 4, 7, 8 and a group portrait of what appear to be staff members. The portraits are taken against a wooden frame building, not much of which is seen. It is clear that the foundation is brick and the structure has clapboard siding. Based on this, it is likely these images depict West Durham School Number One. In 1912 a larger, brick school was built nearby.

Arrangement Note

Ascending by age of school group.

Biographical/Historical

The photographer reponsible for creating these photographs is not known. The creation date is estimated based on the donors testimony and the fact that a new West Durham Graded School constructed out of brick was built in 1912 that replaced the older, smaller school. The old school and the new school were named West Durham Graded School No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.
