Abraham Rencher (1798-1883), a native of North Carolina, served as a Congressman, was charge d'affaires to Portugal (1843-1847), and was territorial governor of New Mexico (1857-1861). His wife was Louisa Mary Jones Rencher (ca. 1810-1901), daughter of Col. Edward Jones.

The collection was donated to the State Archives on April 29, 2005, by the estate of Shirley Winston, Virginia (Marianna Theo, agent). Shirley Winston was a direct descendent of Rencher. Abraham Rencher's daughter Geneva married Robert Newton Winston. The items were accessioned in July, 2005.

The collection is composed of three photographs and one lithograph containing likenesses of the Abraham Rencher family. Includes photographs of Abraham Rencher, Louisa Mary Jones Rencher, daughter Sarah  "Sallie" Rencher Anderson, Col. S. Latham Anderson, and Mary Louisa Anderson.
