Abraham Rencher (1798-1883), a native of North Carolina, served as a Congressman, was charge d'affaires to Portugal (1843-1847), and was territorial governor of New Mexico (1857-1861). His wife was Louisa Mary Jones Rencher (ca. 1810-1901), daughter of Col. Edward Jones.

The collection was donated to the State Archives on April 29, 2005, by the estate of Shirley Winston, Virginia (Marianna Theo, agent). Shirley Winston was a direct descendent of Rencher. Abraham Rencher's daughter Geneva married Robert Newton Winston. The items were accessioned in July, 2005.
