During his administration, Governor Sanford pushed for a great deal of reform, particularly in areas of race reform and education. His progressive ideals caught the attention of President Kennedy and many others, and he was regarded as the standard bearer of a new political ideal. Sanford asserted that education was the key to progress, and pushed forth a number of progressive education reforms, such as greater support for the UNC system, consolidation of the North Carolina Community College system, and the integration of North Carolina's public primary schools. The photographs in the collection span January to the end of September, 1962 covering a tour promoting school integration. Generally they depict Governor Sanford speaking in school gymnasiums or cafeterias and interacting with schoolchildren and local dignitaries.
