Twenty-seven photographic prints depicting primarily scenes in the North Carolina mountains and members of the Way family on vacation there in the 1940's. A note from the donor, Maxwell M. Way, Jr., states that most of these photos were taken on a trip his parents, Monroe Way (M. M. Way, Sr.) and Margaret Way of Carthage, NC, took to the Asheville area around 1940. Their car was a new 1940 Buick.
Rear quarter of a car is visible in right forefront of this photograph.
Maxwell M. Way, Jr., is shown looking through a coin-operated stationary set of binoculars.
Max Way is standing right next to where the water hit the ground. This photo was taken when the main road passed behind the falls - well before the lip of the rock over which the water fell collapsed and the road was diverted to run in front of the water fall.
Photograph shot from a slightly elevated viewpoint of a group of five people (appears to be mixed group of men and at least one woman) sitting on a rocky outcropping overlooking the Linville River below the Falls. Lucille Way may be one of the party depicted or could possibly have been the photographer.
View of Cattail Peak from the summit of Mt. Mitchell. In foreground, the words "Cat Tail" and an arrow are visible, likely part of some descriptive marker at the Mt. Mitchell observtion area at the time the photo was shot.
Photograph shows a low 1 1/2-story building with an enclosed screened porch along one side, lush foliage all around. On the porch there appear to be displays of woven goods and fabric. Bottom right corner of image is over-exposed.
Train depicted has four engines and five cars - 2 engines in front and two in the rear. Rear engines were "pushers" and used to push the train on up grades.
