Peggy Hopson was born in Raleigh, NC, February 23, 1938, to Hubert Eugene Riddle, Jr., and Helen Lewis Riddle. She attended Myrtle Underwood Elementary School and graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1956. She married Charlie L. Hopson, Jr., in 1959, and they had three children: Charlie L. Hopson III, Helen Hopson Rock, and Vaughn Lewis Hopson.

Peggy worked for 40 years in the North Carolina State government, first in the NC Museum of History, then in the Archaeology Branch of the Division of Archives and History, and finally in the Division of Student Affairs at NC State University, where she was the division photographer and edited the monthly newsleter NewsNotes. She retired in 1998.

Peggy served on the board of the Raleigh City Museum for ten years (1992-2002) and was corporate secretary and official photographer to the museum during that time. She was also the official photographer for the Raleigh Bicentennial Commission in 1992. She was the first woman elected president of the Raleigh Diving Association (SCUBA). She was secretary-treasurer of the NC Museums Council (1966-1974); was on the membership committee of the Southeastern Museums Council (1969-1971); secretary-treasurer for the NC Archaeological Council (1974-1978); secretary of the Legal Ethics League (1976-1979); served on committee of the Southeastern Atlantic States underwater film festival (1979-1984); and was a Girl Scout leader (1973-1977). Peggy edited The Tar Heel Diver monthly newsletter for the NC Skin Diving Council during the 1970's and was secretary for that organization for eight years. She is listed in Who's Who of American Women 1978.

Peggy is an avid outdoor enthusiast enjoying boating, water and snow skiing, horses, fox hunting, backpacking, camping, swimming, SCUBA diving, sailing, and tennis, as well as spending time with her grandchildren, painting, reading, and, of course, photography.

This photographic collection is made up of photographs taken by Peggy Hopson. Prints are in color with the exception of the Raleigh Landmarks series. In addition to prints, the collection includes negatives, photo index sheets, one photo CD-ROM, and several textual document enclosures.

Photographs highlight four Raleigh area events taking place between 1991 and 2006 and one Raleigh landmark.

Raleigh Area Events: Raleigh's 200th Anniversary Celebration (1992) - an outdoor festival event held on Fayetteville and surrounding streets in commemoration of Raleigh's 200th birthday. Images include musical acts, food vendors, street shows, childrens activities and art and craft displays.

Raleigh's Red Wolf Ramble (2001) - a temporary city-wide street art event consisting of 100 decorated wolf statues displayed throughout the city's public places. Images include shots of individual wolf statues. The Red Wolf Ramble was designed to raise awareness as to the plight of the endangered Red Wolf. At the conclusion of the event, the wolf statues were auctioned off to raise funds for local art groups.

Fayetteville Street Renovations (2006) - the transformation of downtown Raleigh's Fayetteville Street from its status as a long-time pedestrian mall to a street for vehicular traffic. Images include shots of construction work as well as images of a parade celebrating the completion of the project and reopening of Fayetteville street.

End of Desert Storm Celebration (1991) - two Raleigh celebrations in recognition of the conclusion of the First Persian Gulf War (also known as Operation: Desert Storm). Images include views of a downtown parade welcoming home soldiers and also an event held at the NC State Fairgrounds.

Raleigh Landmark: Glenwood Avenue Bridge (nd) - Variety of shots taken of the bridge on Glenwood Avenue near Hillsborough Street, a bridge holding special childhood memories for the collection's donor, Peggy Hopson.
