Biographical/Historical

Elizabeth Edmond Norris (19 February 1925 - 16 April 2004) was born in Raleigh, NC, to Herbert B. and Minnie R. Norris. She was the granddaughter of Herbert E. Norris, a prominent attorney, North Carolina legislator, and solicitor of the Sixth and Seventh Judicial Districts. Miss Norris grew up in Raleigh at the family home, Norburn Terrace (216 Lafayette Rd., Raleigh, NC.), and attended the Raleigh public schools. She worked for many years as a clerk in the offices of the State Board of Education. She was living at 407 North Blount Street in the late 1960s when most of the photographs in this collection were taken.
Elizabeth E. Norris was a local historian, historical researcher, and writer of historical tracts. She wrote biographic entries for the 'Dictionary of North Carolina Biography' (William S. Powell, ed., UNC Press, 1979-96) on Raleigh notables Thomas Munro Argo, Peter Brown, Theophilus Hunter Hill, and Spier Whitaker, and published 'Historic Oakwood Cemetery' in 1990. Her papers are currently housed in the Southeast Regional Library, Garner, N.C. That collection contains research files, maps, and publications related to Raleigh and Wake County history, the bulk of the collection dealing with historic families, buildings, and cemeteries in the City of Raleigh.
