This collection includes various wire service photographs and newspaper clippings donated by the Minneapolis Public Library. The groupings of images reflect the order in which the materials were donated to the archives.
The first grouping of photographs includes an image of George Barclay, captain and guard on the University of North Carolina Football Team in 1934. The player, who was selected All American that year, is photographed in the classic pose of a crouching lineman. It is an Associated Press photograph. The other two photographs contain images of a barrage balloon being tested at the Barrage Balloon Training Center at Camp Davis, North Carolina in 1941. The first print shows Col. Robert Arthur, Coast Artillery Commanding Officer, with Lt. Col. M. E. McHugo, Commander of the 3rd Balloon Squadron, Air Corps, posing in front of the first barrage balloon being inflated at the training, center, June 27, 1941. It is a Wide World Photo. The second print shows the first barrage balloon taking to the air. The D5 Dilatable Type of low altitude aircraft is being teathered by servicemen on the ground, and many structures at Camp Davis are visible in the photograph. It is also a World Wide Photo. These prints have been copied for the permanent file and are numbered N. 95.2s.
The second group includes photographs of North Carolina Senator Josiah William Bailey (1873-1946), a member of Congress from 1931 to 1946 and chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. In addition, there are photographs of Bill Bailey, a member of the 1938 Duke University Football Team.
The third, fourth and fifth groupings contain photos of various individuals including lawyers, judges, public officials, football players, golfer Johnnie Palmer and labor organizer Fred E. Beal. The fifth grouping also includes photographs of Black Mountain College taken during in the 1930s.
The photographs are organized chronologically and by name.
