Charles M. Allen Jr. Papers, WWII 141

Abstract

The Charles M. Allen Jr. Papers contains letters, photographs, aerial photographs, military services records, a military Thanksgiving Day dinner menu, tourist and military maps of France, a German-language map of Belgium, Wake Forest WWII community newsletter issues, artifacts, and various other materials, documenting the pre-World War II and World War II life and military service of Charles M. Allen Jr. of Mount Gilead and Wake Forest, N.C., from 1942 through 1945. Allen served as an aerial reconnaissance photographer in the 73rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 73rd Observation Group; the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance); and the 363rd Reconnaissance Group, U.S. Army Air Forces. He served in the European Theater from February 1944 through the summer of 1945.

The collection holds a series of over 120 letters written by Allen to his fiancé and later wife Clara David Allen from April 1942 to May 1945. The letters cover Allen's time working as a biology instructor at Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, N.C., and in the U.S. Army Air Forces. Allen discusses their times spent together on weekends; his bus and train trips to and from Wake Forest to see David; music and radio programs he was listening to; his photography and teaching work at Wake Forest College; her family and friends; and their relationship and eventually engagement.

The largest set of letters is from Allen's military service. The letters written by Allen while he was in various stateside military airfields and installations from 1942 to 1943 are very detailed, giving significant information on the daily routines and work for his training at those installations. Allen writes in detail about his daily schedule, his training classes schedule, and what he and his friends did on their downtime. He writes in detail about photographic processes and new equipment he was learning to use, giving an important insight into the life of a WWII aerial reconnaissance photography student. In his letters while stateside and from overseas, Charles Allen would write Clara about his sightseeing, movies and shows he watched, musical and theater performances he attended, and radio and music he heard. Allen also writes about his friends in the service, and people he ran into during training stateside from North Carolina. His letters contain the basic types of information an American serviceman wrote during overseas service in WWII.

The largest set of materials in the collection are over 360 photographs, aerial photographs, and contact prints, taken by or collected by Charles M. Allen Jr. while he was serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. The most significant set of photographs were taken by Allen while he was in various stateside military airfields and installations from 1942 to 1943, including while at Lowry Field in Colorado. There are also a number of photographs taken while Allen was serving in the 73rd Observation Group at Fort Knox and Camp Campbell, Kentucky, while his unit was participating in the Tennessee Maneuvers. Most of these photographs were taken by Allen while he was practicing his photography as part of his training to be an aerial reconnaissance photographer, and other photographers taken during this period appear to be hobby photographs while he was stationed at these locations.

The largest set of photographs include aerial photographs and sightseeing photographs taken by Allen while he was stationed in England and France in 1944. He traveled around to such British cities and towns as Cambridge, Oxford, London, Stratford-on-Avon, and Windsor while he was stationed with the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) preparing for the Normandy invasion of June 1944. Of great significance are a series of aerial photographs of Paris, France, believed taken by Allen around 1944 after the liberation of Paris by the Allies. There are also aerial photographs of Oxford, England, showing portions of the various colleges and elements of the University of Oxford.

Collection Overview

The collection contains letters, photographs, aerial photographs, military services records, a military Thanksgiving Day dinner menu, tourist and military maps of France, a German-language map of Belgium, Wake Forest WWII community newsletter issues, artifacts, and various other materials, documenting the pre-World War II and World War II life and military service of Charles M.

The Wake Forest College letters are an interesting look into the early professional career of a Wake Forest professor who would become one of the more significant scientists and medical professionals in North Carolina after WWII.

Because of their mutual love of music and singing, Charles spoke to Clara in his letters through song lyrics or mentioning song titles, often based on music he was listening to in barracks, camps, or on the radio from wherever he was stationed. Allen also writes about his friends in the service, and people he ran into during training stateside from North Carolina. His letters contain the basic types of information an American serviceman wrote during overseas service in WWII.

There are also aerial photographs of Oxford, England, showing portions of the various colleges and elements of the University of Oxford.

The collection also holds some military services records, ephemera, and maps, from Allen's military service in the U.S. and in Europe. There are several issues of the community newsletter The Woodland News from Wake Forest, N.C., which it appears were mailed to Allen while he was in the military. The issues discuss local happenings and people in Wake Forest, and wartime information is provided. There are also Allen's dog tags, and uniform pins and insignia worn on his Army Air Forces uniform during WWII.

The collection is arranged in six series as follows: Series I: Charles M. Allen Jr. Wake Forest College Letters; Series II: Charles M. Allen Jr. WWII Letters; Series III: Photographs; Series IV: Miscellaneous Materials; Series V: Oversized Materials; and Series VI: Artifacts.

Biographical Note

Charles Marvin Allen Jr. was born on July 31, 1918, in the town of Mount Gilead in Montgomery County, N.C., Charles Marvin and Dora Emma [or Eunice] Covington Allen. Charles Allen Sr. worked as a hardware salesman by 1920. Dora Allen died on March 14, 1921, of stomach cancer. Allen Jr. would attend and graduate from the Mount Gilead public schools.

Charles Allen Jr. attended Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, N.C., starting with his freshman year in the 1935-1936 school year. By his senior year in the fall of 1938, he was working as a member of the staff of the school newspaper The Old Gold and Black. Allen graduated with a B.S. degree in 1939, and would stay at Wake Forest to attend graduate school in the Wake Forest Medical School. During the 1939-1940 school year, Allen was a member of the Wake Forest Glee Club. He would graduate with an M.S. degree in 1941. After his graduation, Allen remained at Wake Forest working as a biology instructor under Dr. Ora C. Bradbury, head of the Biology Department since 1938. It is around this time that he appears to have been doing photography for various school publications, which seems to have led to his later placement in the U.S. military. He also may have been working operating a radio program playing records on the air for the college, as he references in a letter in 1942.

Charles M. Allen Sr. died in 1941, while Charles Allen was working at Wake Forest College. Allen was alone with his sister Lucy and older brother Fentress after their father passed away. Charles would travel back and forth from Wake Forest to Mount Gilead to visit with family and friends through 1942 before his military service. He would begin dating Clara David, who was from Bennettsville, S.C., prior to 1942. He enjoyed classical music, the opera, and theater, as did Clara. Allen also enjoyed drawing, which he apparently did while in the military.

After the United States entered World War II, Allen would enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in Raleigh, N.C., on July 21, 1942. During the summer of 1942, Charles Allen and Clara David got engaged. About October 31, 1942, Allen left by train from Raleigh for his military training camp in Colorado, traveling through Birmingham, Alabama, before heading west.

During the first week of November 1942, Charles Allen attended the U.S. Army Air Corps [later Army Air Forces] Technical School at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado. He attended the 12-week Army Air Forces Photographic School there, and was part of the Aviation Cadet Detachment numbered "Class 5-43-F." Allen was present at the base when the U.S. Army Air Forces brought in eight Chinese air force students to study aerial photography at Lowry in November 1942. While he was stationed at Lowry Field, Clara David was attending college at Flora McDonald College [present-day St. Andrew's University in Laurinburg, N.C.], where she majored in Primary Education and Voice. Both had a love for music and singing, which they discuss in their wartime letters to each other.

On December 26, 1942, Allen learned that he would be assigned after Lowry Field to the Army Air Forces Training Station (AAFTS) at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He arrived there on January 5, 1943, to attend the Photography School there. Allen was honorably discharged from the Army Air Forces as an Aviation Cadet on February 17, 1943, in order to accept an officer's commission as a 2nd Lieutenant while he was at Yale. Between February 21 and 23, 1943, Allen was reassigned to the 73rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 73rd Observation Group, U.S. Army Air Forces, at Godman Field at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He would be temporarily assigned to the Headquarters Squadron for his unit. Unfortunately, there were too many photographers stationed at the same time at Godman Field, and Allen's position seems to have been unclear for a period of time.

While at Godman Field, Charles Allen and his unit were engaged in numerous training activities, participating in the Tennessee Maneuvers at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, in 1943. They would spend time at the Army Air Forces' base at Berry Field in Nashville, Tennessee, including in September 1943. The AAF operated the airfields at Fort Knox and in Tennessee jointly, and the training units at Godman Field would split time in both states between February and November 1943. The 73rd Observation Group would be re-designated several times over the next year, first as the 73rd Reconnaissance Group in April 1943; then 73rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group in August 1943; and finally as the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) in December 1943. Before he went to Europe, Charles Allen married Clara David.

During the Tennessee Maneuvers, Allen's unit was equipped with and trained on the following aircraft types: A-20 Havocs; P-40 Warhawks; P-51 Mustangs; and L-1 and L-4 light observation aircraft. After the end of the maneuvers, Allen and his unit was assigned to the AAF base Key Field in Meridian, Mississippi, in preparation for being shipped out overseas to the European Theater in WWII. The 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) [also listed as the 10th Photographic Reconnaissance Group] deployed overseas between January and February 1944. They were assigned for duty with U.S. 9th Air Force at the British Royal Air Force airfield at Chalgrove, England. Allen was serving as a Lieutenant in Headquarters, 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance), while in England.

At Chalgrove, the 10th RPG consisted of six photographic squadrons flying a variety of reconnaissance aircraft. The unit would photograph enemy airfields; coastal defenses; and ports. They also shot bomb damage assessment photographs of airfields, marshaling yards, bridges, and other targets in preparation for the Allies' Normandy invasion. The 10th PRG received a Distinguished Unit Citation for flying at low altitude to photograph the English Channel coast from Blankenberge to Dunkirk, and from Le Touquet to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, France, prior to the D-Day invasion. The unit made these flights from May 6-20, 1944.

The 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) supported the Normandy invasion in June 1944 by making visual and photographic reconnaissance of bridges, artillery, road and railway junctions, traffic centers, airfields, and other targets. The group's various units were deployed for different purposes throughout France from June through August 1944. On the European continent, the 10th PRG aided the U.S. Third Army and other Allied organizations in the battle to breach the Siegfried Line from September through December 1944. Allen and his unit flew daylight and night photographic missions during this period. They performed tactical reconnaissance for ground and air units, directing artillery to enemy positions and fighter bombers to various targets. The group participated in the Battle of the Bulge by flying photographic reconnaissance missions in the combat zone through January 1945.

The 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) assisted the advance of Third Army across the Rhine River, to Czechoslovakia, into Austria, and eventually arriving in Germany where they would be stationed after the end of combat for occupation duties. The 10th PRG would be stationed at the following locations in continental Europe: Rennes, France, from August 11, 1944, to August 30, 1944; Chateaudun, France, from August 30, 1944, to September 30, 1944; Saint-Dizier, France, from September 30, 1944, to November 1, 1944; Conflans, France, from November 1, 1944, to March 1945; Trier, Germany, from March 1945 to April 5, 1945; Ober-Olm, Germany, from April 5 to April 28, 1945; and Fürth, Germany, where the 10th PGR would be stationed after V-E Day.

The 10th PGR would remain in Germany after the war as part of the U.S. Army of Occupation. They were assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces in Europe. Allen's unit was re-designated as the 10th Reconnaissance Group in June 1945. He was reassigned to Headquarters, 363rd Reconnaissance Group, U.S. Army Air Forces, by July 1945. Allen would be promoted to the rank of Major by 1945. It is unknown for how long Charles Allen remained stationed in Europe, though he was back in Wilmington, N.C., by November 1945 with the Army Air Corps Reserve. He had come to live in Wilmington because his wife Clara Allen was teaching in the Wilmington public schools by that period. On November 11, 1945, Major Allen was appointed to the U.S. Army Officers' Reserve Corps for inactive service after the end of WWII.

Immediately after returning to North Carolina in 1945, Charles Allen returned to work as a biology instructor at Wake Forest College, while he was attending and completing his Ph.D at Duke University. Allen was widely involved in the campus, including helping to paint sets for the university's theater. Clara Allen taught in the Wake Forest, N.C., schools, and worked part-time at Wake Forest College. In 1956, the Allens moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., when now Wake Forest University was relocated there from Wake Forest, N.C. Under the supervision of Dr. Allen, Winston Hall was completed in 1961 at Wake Forest, which was the new larger home of the Department of Biology. From the department's three biology instructors Bradbury, Cocke, and Allen in the early 1940s, the teaching staff for the Department of Biology grew to 12 by 1967.

Dr. Charles Allen was the driving force behind the construction of the Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest. He had served as the Director of Concerts and Lectures for the university, based on his deep love of music and the arts. Allen was honored at the dedication of the Scales Fine Arts Center's art and theatre wings in 1976 with the university's Medallion of Merit, the highest honor given by Wake Forest presented annually for outstanding achievement and distinguished contribution to the university. He was the only person to receive the award while still working for the university.

Allen was the director of the Wake Forest University Artists Series from 1958 to 1976, which brought internationally-renowned artists and orchestras to the university. Allen supervised the renovation of Wait Chapel and Reynolda Village at the university. During their lives, Charles and Clara Allen collected art, and contributed pieces of art to various institutions. Charles Allen's love of art had been expanded during his time in Europe in WWII, including while getting to see classic architecture in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries in which he traveled and was stationed between January 1944 and the summer of 1945.

He had been a president of the North Carolina Academy of Science. Dr. Charles Allen retired from Wake Forest University in 1989. Prior to his retirement, Allen received the Jon Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching. In 2001, the Wake Forest University Department of Biology established the Charles M. Allen Professorship in Biology.

Clara Allen taught for 34 years at the Summit School in Winston-Salem until her retirement in 1990. Clara Allen would have an active musical career a soloist for many years in Wake Forest and in Winston-Salem, particularly singing for community churches. She was a soloist with the Winston-Salem Symphony, and sang in the Symphony Chorale and the Singers Guild. She was a founding member of the Piedmont Chamber Singers, and performed with this group until 2005.

Dr. Charles M. Allen Jr. died on August 30, 2005, and was interred at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, N.C. Clara D. Allen died on May 28, 2017, in Winston-Salem.

Contents of the Collection

1. Charles M. Allen Jr. Wake Forest College Letters

Scope and Content:

Series I consists of letters written by Charles Allen Jr. to his girlfriend and later fiancé Clara David of Bennettsville, S.C., while he was working as a first-year biology instructor at Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, N.C. Allen was writing to David while she was living in Bennettsville; teaching at Buckhorn School in Kenly, N.C.; and attending college at Flora McDonald College in Laurinburg, N.C., from April to October 1942. Allen discusses their times spent together on weekends; his bus and train trips to and from Wake Forest to see David; music and radio programs he was listening to; his photography and teaching work at Wake Forest College; her family and friends; and their relationship and eventually engagement. He also drawings a picture of an engagement ring in a letter discussing their engagement.

The letters are an interesting look into the early professional career of a Wake Forest professor who would become one of the more significant scientists and medical professionals in North Carolina after WWII. The letters also show what life was like for a young man just before he entered full-time active service in the U.S. military during WWII. There are a large number of undated letters during 1942, that had been removed from their envelopes and stored by Clara David Allen in her personal possessions since WWII.

2. Charles M. Allen Jr. WWII Letters

Scope and Content:

Series II consists of letters written from and to Charles Allen Jr. while he was serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII. Most of the letters were written by Allen to his fiancé and later wife Clara David Allen, who was living in Bennettsville, S.C.; later attending college at Flora McDonald College in Laurinburg, N.C.; and lastly teaching in Wilmington, N.C.

Allen would make occasional drawings in his letters to Clara, such as while in photography school at Lowry Field of him wearing a gas mask, saying, "As soon as they let us make some personal pictures I'm going to send you one of me in a gas mask. I look like a lop eared elephant. Do you think you could love a monstrosity like that?" [see November 1942 letter, Box 1, Folder 7]. Allen's correspondence from his time stationed in Europe from January 1944 through May 1945 provide very little detail on his work, reconnaissance missions, or location details, as all of his work and missions were classified. He would frequently discuss his missing Clara and reminisce on their times together. In one January 29, 1942, letter sent just before he shipped out to England, Charles would write her that despite the wartime censorship and inability to share details of his life with her, "But there's one thing they can't censor-I love you with all my heart and will" [see Box 1, Folder 11].

In his letters while stateside and from overseas, Charles Allen would write Clara about his sightseeing, movies and shows he watched, musical and theater performances he attended, and radio and music he heard. Because of their mutual love of music and singing, Charles spoke to Clara in his letters through song lyrics or mentioning song titles, often based on music he was listening to in barracks, camps, or on the radio from wherever he was stationed. Interestingly, some of these local radio songs or performances mentioned by Charles Allen were detailed enough for enemy military personnel to have been able to pinpoint his service location based on when that performance or song was aired (Axis forces monitored British radio for such information during WWII). He would express his love for Clara and his feelings in song lyrics.

In a March 4, 1943, letter from Fort Knox, Kentucky, Charles wrote, "Lt. Chaffee in the next room has his radio going-softly I hear the strains of 'Songs My Mother Taught Me.' I'm reminded of your singing last summer down by 'David's Pond.' The last selection was 'Land of Hope and Glory' (Pomp and Circumstance). Now they are singing 'Song of the Volga Boatman.' I'm certainly glad that since he has a radio he likes good music" [see Box 1, Folder 10]. He would write in an April 12, 1943, letter from Godman Field in Kentucky to Clara Allen, "I've just gotten in from work and am fixing to listen to the Album of Familiar Music but I'd much rather hear you" [see Box 1, Folder 10].

Allen also writes about his friends in the service, and people he ran into during training stateside from North Carolina. He talks about his good friend and later commanding officer James M. Smelley (who went by "Jim"), who was fighter pilot in the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) and later commander of Allen's unit 363rd Reconnaissance Group by July 1945. His letters contain the basic types of information an American serviceman wrote during overseas service in WWII.

There are significant gaps in the chronology of his letters written to Clara, as it appears sets of these letters were lost or discarded at different points since World War II (including due to various moves that the couple had). The dates for letters missing from this collection includes: May-December 1943, March-April 1944, September-December 1944, and June-September 1945. For two of these periods, Allen was on operational duty flying regular reconnaissance missions in Europe, and it is unknown how often he wrote to Clara Allen then. There are also letters written to Charles and Clara Allen by friends during WWII.

3. Photographs

Scope and Content:

Series III consists of photographs, aerial photographs, and contact prints, taken by or collected by Charles M. Allen Jr. while he was serving in the U.S.

Allen used various Army Air Forces photographic processing laboratories to print his photographs, as evidenced by writing on the negatives identifying the dates and locations of the photographs (identical to the informational format written on Army Air Forces reconnaissance photographs). Allen had a great interest in architecture and art, which these photographs show him discovering in Europe during WWII. He would be influenced by these travels when he returned to work at Wake Forest College after the war.

Of great significance are a series of aerial photographs of Paris, France, believed taken by Allen around 1944 after the liberation of Paris by the Allies. Some of the photographs show the plane the photographer was flying in turning sharply around the Eiffel Tower, for example. These photographs offer a unique view of the wartime city. There are also aerial photographs of Oxford, England, showing portions of the various colleges and elements of the University of Oxford.

The series contains some general scenes of wartime England, including British soldiers marching, British nurses walking down the sidewalk, and wartime savings bonds drive posters at popular locations such as Piccadilly Circus. Allen also took and collected photographs of his friends and his travels while in France and the Netherlands, including while his unit was camped in the Bois de Boulogne park in Paris in 1944. Some photographs were taken of his unit's stop in various towns in eastern France and in Venlo, the Netherlands.

Uniquely, the collection holds four photographs of U.S. Army Air Forces personnel with the 31st Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron in an aerial reconnaissance laboratory in England in June 1944, processing aerial reconnaissance negatives of France around the time of the Normandy invasion. There are also a set of photographs documenting the religious services of the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) in England and in France. Conducted by Allen's friend and unit Army chaplain Rev. Frederick J. Ackman of Iowa, the photographs document a field chapel service in France around 1944.

Series III contains portraits and snapshots of Charles Allen Jr., and his friends and fellow servicemen from North Carolina and his military units. There are also four photographs taken by and of Allen after WWII while he was at Wake Forest University in both Wake Forest and Winston-Salem, N.C., sometime between the 1950s and 1960s. All of these photographs document Allen's development as a photographer, which experience and skill he continued to use for personal use and for his friends up through the early 2000s.

5. Oversized Materials

Scope and Content:

Series V consists of three oversized aerial reconnaissance photographs and one German map of Oxford, England, from WWII. The photographs were taken or collection by Charles Allen's 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance), U.S. Army Air Forces. Of significance are the two photographs of portions of beach and coastline of the White Cliffs of Dover in England, taken by Allen's unit while flying at low altitude from May 6-20, 1944, to photograph the English Channel coast from Blankenberge to Dunkirk, and from Le Touquet to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, France, prior to the Allied D-Day invasion. The two photographs are the only images it appears Allen retained from his role in this significant historical effort. There is also a large, folded aerial photograph of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, and surroundings from June 20, 1943.

The series also includes one German-language map of the city of Oxford and surround county of Oxfordshire, England, with Allied military installations printed or hand-colored in red on the map with corresponding numbers. The map appears to have been used by the German military during WWII while they were bombing and preparing for an invasion of England. Map was collected at an unknown point by Allen while he was serving as an aerial reconnaissance photographer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, as he had been stationed in Oxford in 1944.

Acquisitions Information

Materials in this collection were received by the Military Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina from Dr. Paul N. Orser of Winston-Salem, N.C., executor of Clara David Allen's estate and friend of Charles M. Allen Jr., in August 2017. The donation was completed in September 2017.

Processing Information

The collection had some order for portions of it when it was first received by the State Archives in August 2017. Sets of letters from a common time period were stored together in boxes or envelopes by Charles Allen's wife Clara following his death. It appears she attempted to organize his wartime letters, including writing notes about what they were (such as "College Letters" for his letters written while he worked at Wake Forest College in 1942). This order was largely retained during the processing of the collection. Some duplicate materials, mass-produced WWII photographic prints, and modern miscellaneous items that had gotten mixed in with the papers, were removed and discarded from collection in accordance with State Archives' practice and the wishes of the donor.

All letters were organized chronologically according to the dates written on the letters or the post marks on their corresponding envelopes. Any letters without envelopes or dates were approximately dated. Circa dates were written using pencil on the top of each letter by the collection's processor, using brackets to denote the information had been added. All envelopes with unique information or dates were photocopied as a preservation practice, and attached to each letter using an acid-free plastic clip. All envelopes were discarded after any necessary information was added in pencil to the letters.

For two of these periods, Allen was on operational duty flying regular reconnaissance missions in Europe, and it is unknown how often he wrote to Clara Allen.

A number of sets of photographs were also grouped together by location or period either by Charles or Clara Allen. The smaller photographs from his time stationed in various military bases stateside in 1942 and 1943 were stored in a flip photo album common in 1940s dime stores, with the prints adhered in the album with adhesive "V-shaped" strips. These strips were removed carefully from the backs of the photographs, but they still left residue and staining on the backs of the photographs that is unable to be removed.

The photographs in the collection have been individually stored in acid-free, archival plastic sleeves to allow for researchers to handle the original images without causing damage to the images' surface, and to improve preservation during long-term storage (except for the oversized photographs, which did not fit within standard-sized photo sleeves). The photographs have been numbered with a soft HB No. 2 pencil on the back, according to the collection number, the box and folder number, and an individual image number. For example, the number "WWII 141.B2.F15.1" should be interpreted as "WWII 141 collection, Box 2, Folder 15, Photograph 1."

The identifications of these images have been created in the finding aid, but not written on the photograph itself. Both Charles and Clara Allen wrote descriptions and dates on the backs and sometimes the fronts of many of the photographs. Historical research was conducted to verify content and original photograph identification by the creator to provide an accurate description for the photographs.

The oversized German map of Oxford, England, was originally kept folded, and had a strip of fabric tap on the back (which was removed, as it was not structural or repairing a tear in the map). It was flattened, but still retains significant crease lines from the extended period of time stored folded. The German map series of Belgium and the U.S. Army road map of France were left folded as they had been in their original cardboard map case or jacket. As both of these are duplicates of the same maps already held by the Military Collection in other collections, it was determined to not exert archival storage supplies and space to storing these maps flat.

The oversized materials were removed from the collection and placed in oversized, acid-free archival folders. The artifacts were removed from the main collection and placed in a separate artifact box (see "Separated Material" note for more information on the artifact). Both the oversized materials and the artifacts were arranged at the end of the collection.
