The tug  Maryland was a ship of the Norfolk, Baltimore and Carolina Line and was engaged in towing barges in interstate commerce. It was built in 1938, and was known as the  LT-801,  Stephen F. Austin and  T. Thomas D. Sollom before being renamed  Maryland in the mid-1950s.
