Rotary International is an organization with local chapters stated purpose is to "bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world." The first Rotary Club was formed in 1905 by attorney Paul P. Harris. The first meeting was held with three of his friends. They chose the name Rotary because they rotated club meetings to each member's office each week. Today the club consists of 1.2 million businesses, professionals, and community leaders. The National Association of Rotary Clubs was formed in 1910. The Manteo Rotary Club was chartered in 1936. The club's office is located at 108 Budleigh St., Manteo, N.C., and is currently in district 7720.

The materials in the original donation cover 1937-1951. The materials in the second donation cover 1976-1997. These papers belonged to Wally McCown, although they were donated by Jay Burrus, and include McCown's correspondence, newsletters, district information, and club activities. Also in this collection are procedure handbooks and club directories. Most folders have retained original labeling; those that do not are enclosed in brackets.
