The Dare County group was formed in 1987 with 15 members with Diane Henderson serving as the unit representative. An attempt to attain local league status was organized in the early 1970s and 1980s, but was rejected by the national organization. Each year the organization publishes the Citizen's Guide, a directory of elected officials and local services; sponsors public candidate forums; and, hosts programs that increase awareness of public services and community issues.
