Collection Overview

Black Mountain College was established in 1933 as an independent, coeducational, four-year college and originally was located in the buildings leased from Blue Ridge Assembly, near Black Mountain, N.C. In 1941 the college moved to the nearby Lake Eden property purchased by the corporation, and it remained at this location until it closed in 1956.
The faculty constituted the corporation and elected from its members the Board of Fellows, the governing body of the college that made appointments to the faculty and controlled fiscal affairs. The rector, who was the titular head of the college, was elected by the faculty from those chosen to the Board, which in turn selected the secretary of the corporation and the treasurer from its membership. The chief student body officer was also a member of the Board of Fellows. Educational policy and student discipline were the responsibility of the faculty as a whole, with student officers participating in the discussion and handling of disciplinary problems. An Advisory Council composed of friends of the college elected by the Board of Fellows served in an advisory capacity only and had no direct control over college affairs.

The curriculum was divided into Junior and Senior Divisions with all entering students being placed in the lower division regardless of previous education. Entrance into the Senior Division was not dependent on the number of courses completed successfully but rather was determined by the results of comprehensive oral and written examinations as well as the achievement record of the student. Graduation from the college was on the same basis, with professors from other institutions conducting the examinations. There were no required courses, but each student prepared with his or her advisor a plan of work and was expected to complete a well- rounded course of study. Classes, which were a combination of recitations, lectures, tutorials, and seminars, met at the discretion of the teacher and attendance was voluntary.

No degrees were granted by the college, which was officially unaccredited; however, many of the graduates were accepted for graduate study and transfer credit was given to undergraduates. The quantity and quality of work required for graduation was equivalent to that required for the degree of Bachelor of Arts by accredited colleges and universities. Summer institutes in music and art were held in alternate years from 1943-1948 and classes were taught by outstanding persons in those fields.

Black Mountain College was begun as an experiment of "education in a democracy," with the idea that the creative arts and practical responsibilities are equal in importance to the development of the intellect, that learning and living are intimately connected. Dramatics, music, and the fine arts were regarded as an integral part of the life of the college. No student worked his way through college, but everyone, faculty and students alike, participated in work on the farm operated by the college, constructed buildings, did maintenance work, served meals, etc. Many classes were held at night, and none was scheduled from 12:00-4:00 PM in order to allow time for work on the campus. There was no organized athletic program as it was thought there should be no sharp distinction between work and play; however, a gymnasium, tennis courts, swimming pool, and other recreational facilities were available.

Prior to the transfer of the records of Black Mountain College to the Archives in February 1963, they had been stored with the Ingle Transfer and Storage Company and the Daniels Business Service in Asheville. Authorization for the release of the records to the Archives was given by Mr. Charles Olson, trustee of the college.
The titles of the series in which these papers are arranged are for the most part the same as those used by the college. In a few instances folder titles have been changed or supplied for clarity.

The minutes of the Board of Fellows and faculty meetings were recorded by the secretary of the corporation and filed in binders. In arranging this group, papers were included which were found together in one file drawer, and were apparently kept by the secretary of the corporation in connection with the minutes. The General Files and Faculty Files apparently originated in the offices of the rector and the secretary of the corporation. The records in these groups are filed by subject and under names of individuals. Some personal correspondence is included.

The Student Files and the files of Students, Rejected or Withdrawn, were kept by the registrar and are composed of correspondence concerning admission, applications for admission, letters of recommendation, correspondence concerning the student's progress, if applicable, etc. These files are restricted.

The Treasurer's Files and Student Financial Files were maintained by the Treasurer. They are filed by subject and by name of individual or firm. The Student Financial Files are restricted.

In addition to the above records, there are approximately 17,000 individual course cards, which were kept for transfer credit purposes. These are filed alphabetically by name of the student. This series is also restricted.
