Roanoke Island Historical Exposition Photographs, AV.5181

Abstract

The photographs in this collection were created by the Roanoke Island Historical Association for the 1937 Roanoke Island Historical Exposition, which celebrated the 350th anniversary of the disappearance of the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh's "lost" colony and the birth of Virginia Dare. This collection consists of 21 original 1.75" x 2.75" sepia souvenir photographs and 23 black and white enlarged prints of the photographs, which were produced by Outer Banks History Center staff around the 1990s or 2000s. Most of the images depict buildings and scenes around Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, including visitors and staff members, as well as the amphitheater constructed for the Lost Colony performance, the Mother Vine, the landing site of the Raleigh colony, and historical markers erected in honor of the Wright Brothers' first flight in Kill Devil Hills.

Collection Overview

This collection consists of 1.75" x 2.75" sepia souvenir photographs created for the 1937 Roanoke Island Historical Exposition as well as black and white enlarged prints of the photographs, which were produced by Outer Banks History Center staff around the 1990s or 2000s. The collection is incomplete, with only 21 of the original souvenir photographs having survived; however, enlarged prints for an additional two photographs are present. The original photographs appear to have been removed from a scrapbook, and many are torn or fragile.

Biographical/Historical

The photographs in this collection were created by the Roanoke Island Historical Association for the 1937 Roanoke Island Historical Exposition, which celebrated the 350th anniversary of the disappearance of the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh's "lost" colony and the birth of Virginia Dare. This exposition also marked the first performance of Paul Green's symphonic drama, The Lost Colony. The photographs were produced by the Grogan Photo Service, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois, and sold for $0.35 in a souvenir folder labeled "25 Genuine Photographs, 1587-1937." Most of the images depict buildings and scenes around Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, including visitors and staff members, as well as the amphitheater constructed for the Lost Colony performance, the Mother Vine, the landing site of the Raleigh colony, and historical markers erected in honor of the Wright Brothers' first flight in Kill Devil Hills.
