Mike Booher is a freelance photographer perhaps best known for extensively documenting the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. His collection of photographs includes approximately 4,200 images of the lighthouse relocation as well as other slides and film transparencies documenting historic sites, attractions, events, and people along the Outer Banks.

Collection Overview

The Mike Booher Photographs, 1982-2003, consist primarily of color slides and film transparencies, as well as digital images. A significant portion of the collection (approximately 4,200 slides and seven discs of digital images) documents the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. Other topics covered by the collection include the Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station, numerous Outer Banks lighthouses, Roanoke Island Festival Park and the Elizabeth II State Historic Site, and Jockey's Ridge State Park. Additionally, many of Booher's photographs depict scenes around the Outer Banks, including local flora and fauna, beachgoers and vacationers, fishing (including commercial fishing, charter fishing, surf fishing, pier fishing, and other recreational fishing), hang gliding, and windsurfing.

Biographical/Historical

Mike Booher is a freelance photographer based in Asheville, North Carolina. His primary focus in photography is the National Park Service, and he has photographed numerous National Park Service projects throughout the southeast. He is primarily known for extensively documenting the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. That same year, he received the National Park Service Director's Award for Volunteer of the Year for the Southeast Region. His photographs from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse relocation were published in a book, Out of Harm's Way: Moving Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, co-authored by Lin Ezell, in 2001.
