Collection Overview
The Carolinian Hotel Photographs and Films, 1943-1968, contains photographs and films created by the owners and affiliates of the Carolinian Hotel in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The bulk of the collection dates from the hotel's heyday in the 1950s and the 1960s. Photographs depict hotel guests using the facilities at the hotel; events coordinated by the hotel or attended by guests and staff, such as fox hunts and the Dare Coast Pirates Jamboree; social gatherings; fashion shows; and recreational activities. Also included in the collection are six 16mm film reels depicting events at the hotel, including the Dare Coast Pirates Jamboree, fox hunts, the opening of the hotel's new swimming pool, and sports events. Most of the reels are undated but presumed to have been created around 1960 or earlier, based on markings on the film canisters.
Biographical/Historical
The Carolinian Hotel was located in Nags Head, North Carolina, on the oceanfront between mileposts 10 and 11. It first opened in 1947. The hotel was open year round and served as a popular location for visiting sport hunters in the off season. In addition to amenities such as a popular dining hall and swimming pool, the hotel offered numerous events for the entertainment of its guests, such as dances, fashion shows, parties, fox hunts, live music, and sporting events. The hotel also served as one of the primary hubs for the annual Dare Coast Pirates Jamboree, due to its owner, Julian Oneto, being heavily involved in the planning of the event. The hotel was demolished in 2001.
