Abstract
The Hatteras Marlin Club is a private club located at the southern end of Hatteras
Island in the village of Hatteras. Founded in 1959, the club is known for its Annual
Invitational Blue Marlin Release Tournament held each summer in late June or early
July. This collection contains color and black and white photographic prints from
many of the annual tournaments held in the first 55 years of the club's existence.

Collection Overview
The Hatteras Marlin Club Photographs, 1964-2019, contains color and black and white
photographs taken during the club's annual fishing tournaments. Photographs are primarily
8" x 10" or 4" x 6" and were originally housed in photo albums. Many of the photographs
taken during early tournaments in the 1960s have sustained water damage and are unsuitable
for reproduction. The images depict the various events associated with the annual
fishing tournament, including cookouts, luncheons, dances, luaus, games, parties,
socializing, formal dinners, awards ceremonies, and family events. Additionally, images
of the tournament participants are usually included, depicting the various boats participating
in the tournament, teams bringing in fish, successful participants posing with their
best catch, tournament winners, and prizes presented. In addition to fishing tournament
photographs, one folder of images depicting property damage to the club in the wake
of a 2003 storm (possibly Hurricane Isabel) is also included. Very rarely, related
papers (such as tournament schedules and flyers) are included with the photographs.
Photographs have not survived for every tournament; for instance, the first four tournaments
(1959-1963) are not represented in the collection.

The Hatteras Marlin Club is a private club located at the southern end of Hatteras
Island in the village of Hatteras. Organized in 1959 by Charles F. Johnson, Earl Phillips
and Luther Hodges, the club is known for its Annual Invitational Blue Marlin Release
Tournament held each summer in late June or early July. The club also provides amenities
such as fine dining and secured dockage to its members. As of 2019, the Hatteras Marlin
Club still operated, and its 60th annual fishing tournament was held that year.
