Collection Overview
This collection primarily consists of 29 10.5" open reel audiotapes created by employees of WVOD radio. The tapes contain advertisements, public service announcements, and other radio spots that were broadcast on the station from 1992 to 2001. The tapes were originally numbered 41 through 70 by WVOD staff. Tape #65 was not present at the time of donation and presumed lost or still in possession of the radio station. In addition to the audiotapes, the collection includes an additional audio reel identified as "Andy G./Melody Leckie Takes 10/29/01" and two folders of production master sheets. The production master sheets list the content of each tape in the order it was recorded, as well as the client who purchased the airtime. While production master sheets for tapes #9-40 and minidiscs #1-2 are included, these recordings are not present in the collection.
Arrangement Note
Original order has been retained.
Biographical/Historical
WVOD is a commercial radio station headquartered in Manteo, N.C., that serves the Outer Banks area. Its call sign stands for "Voice of Dare County," and it was originally broadcast under the title "Your Voice of Dare" on 99.3 FM. WVOD was founded in 1986 under the company name Orbit Communications, with the first broadcast airing Easter weekend of that year. The station eventually expanded and moved to 99.1 FM, and in 1996 it began broadcasting under the name "99.1 The Sound." The station was sold several times before being purchased in 2018 by Jam Media Solutions. As of 2021, it still operates as an adult album alternative music station.
