Biographical/Historical
The photographs in this collection were taken by members of the Van Vleek family of Norfolk, Virginia, who owned property in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Van Vleek property was located on N.C. Highway 12 in Kitty Hawk about one mile south of Wink's Grocery and owned by the children of John Henry Van Vleek (1855-1917) and Amelia Splitburger Van Vleek (1864-1950). Their son, Stanley Van Vleek (1891-1956), owned a cottage on the property. Next to the cottage was a laundromat owned and operated by Stanley's brother, Herbert Van Vleek (1893-1984). Both properties survived the immensely destructive Ash Wednesday Storm, which destroyed a large number of homes and businesses on the Outer Banks in March 1962. The cottage was eventually sold by Stanley's wife, Mattie Jernigan Van Vleek (1895-1985) in the 1970s.
