Collection Overview
This collection consists of two albums containing 8x10" color aerial photographs of the Outer Banks of North Carolina taken sometime in the 1970s. These images, taken by photographer Paul J. Smith, were captured from an airplane as it flew the length of N.C. Highway 12 (commonly known as the Beach Road) from Southern Shores to South Nags Head. The images depict homes and businesses along the Beach Road and Bypass, in most cases including the area to the west of the bypass abutting the Roanoke Sound.

The photographs in these albums are arranged geographically from north to south, based on the areas they depict.
Biographical/Historical
Paul J. Smith is a photographer from Ocean City, Maryland. As of 2021, he still operates a photography studio there. The images in this collection were taken during a visit to the Outer Banks in the 1970s.
