Summers Family Photographs and Memory Booklet, AV.7023
Abstract
Alfred James Summers and Ethel Bobbitt Summers and their seven children lived on a
farm near Browns Summit in Guilford County, N.C.
This collection is comprised of a handmade booklet containing autographs, postcards,
photographs, and newspaper clippings created by Louise Summers in July 1929 while
attending a conference at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly; 8 black and white photos showing
James Randall Summers during his service in Civilian Conservation Corps company 408;
and 23 black and white photos of Mary Williard Summers and freinds at Lees McRae College
in the 1930s.

Biographical/Historical
Louise N. Summers (1906-2002) was the first of 7 children born near Greensboro, North
Carolina to Alfred James Summers and Ethel Bobbitt Summers. In 1929, Louise attended
a Southern Business Girls conference at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly near Black Mountain,
N.C. According to census records, Louise worked as a clerk at the Greensboro YWCA
in 1930, as an instructor at the Lucas County (Ohio) Children's Home in 1940, and
as a stenographer for an insurance company.
James Randall Summers (1912-2005) was the fourth child in the Summers family. During
the 1930s, he served in CCC Company 408 at Camp Winfield Scott in western Macon County.
In 1942, Randall enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg. In 1966 Randall married
Evelyn Brim Williams. He worked as a dairy farmer and in the textile industry.
Mary Williard Summers (1917-2016) was the sixth child in the Summers family. She graduated
from Summerfield High school and attended Lees-Macrae College, in Banner Elk, N.C.
After college, she worked at the Lucas County (Ohio) Children's Home with her sister
Louise. She married William Clarence Davidson; they had three children.
