Baptists first worshiped in America in the early 18th century. The religion gained followers after the Great Awakening in the 1730s and '40s. During the rise of the mission movement in the early 1800s, a large split divided Baptists. Supporters of the mission movement that advocated tract societies, theological seminaries, and charitable work, became known as Missionary Baptists, while those who followed traditional Baptist theology became known as Regular or Primitive Baptists.

This collection contains correspondence, ledger books, newspaper clippings, and session books from Elim and Providence Primitive Baptist churches. The ledger books provide a wealth of information regarding the church. The ledgers contain membership lists, clerk and deacon lists, records of the quarterly and monthly meetings, information regarding the church history, rules of decorum, the faith of the church, as well as membership death records. The ledgers are very fragile and the ink is faded in some areas.
