Abstract
The Dunes of Dare Garden Club was founded in 1967 and is fully affiliated with the
Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. and the National Council of State Garden Clubs,
Inc. The Club's main purpose is to provide a nonprofit, philanthropic and educational
association for the members and to encourage environmental improvement through civic
development, beautification and the protection and conservation of natural resources.
The Dunes of Dare Garden Club Records, 1966-2017 and undated, contains correspondence,
newspaper clippings, booklets, pamphlets, flyers, write-ups, agendas, reports, meeting
minutes, by-laws, handbooks, applications, budget materials, fiscal summaries and
fiscal year records, account books, digital files, slides, photographs, and an audio
tape and transcripts.

Collection Overview
The Dunes of Dare Garden Club Records, 1966-2017 and undated, contains correspondence,
newspaper clippings, booklets, pamphlets, flyers, write-ups, agendas, reports, meeting
minutes, by-laws, handbooks, applications, budget materials, fiscal summaries and
fiscal year records, account books, digital files, slides, photographs, and an audio
tape and transcripts. Materials are arranged into four series: Organizational Records,
1967-2017 and undated; Scrapbooks, 1966-2016; Publications, 1979-2012 and undated;
and Special Programs, 1970-2012 and undated.
The Organizational Records series contains materials related to the administrative
and financial organization of the Dunes of Dare Garden Club as well as that of its
state and nation-wide affiliates. The series contains two subseries. The Administrative
Records subseries contains agendas, reports, meeting minutes, by-laws, handbooks,
club communications and correspondence, applications, and board files. The Financial
Records subseries contains budget materials, treasurer's reports, payment files and
correspondence, fiscal summaries and fiscal year records, account books, audit and
taxation files, and records from the Ways and Means committee. Materials date from
1967 to 2017.
An ongoing project for the Dunes of Dare Garden Club has been the production of scrapbooks
documenting the club's ongoing functions and raising member awareness of current and
past club programs. Events and records covered in the Scrapbooks series include awards,
publicity projects, general club history and yearly events, the Yard of the Season
project, and photographs. Materials date from 1966 to 2016.
Several publications recorded the Dunes of Dare Garden Club's projects and were used
by the club over the course of its operations. The Publications series contains several
of these materials, including copies of the Dunes of Dare Garden Club Yearbook. The
series also contains publications produced by affiliates of the club, such as the
Garden Club of North Carolina and the National Garden Clubs organization, as well
publications related to program undertaken by the club and related newsletters. Materials
date from 1979 to 2012.
The club has been responsible for organizing a number of events and projects within
the Outer Banks community. Programs documented in the Special Programs series include
flower shows, the Dunes of Dare Garden Club scholarships, National Garden Week, the
Thomas A. Baum Senior Center and connected garden, the Butterfly Gardens, the Outer
Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden, the Rogallo Program, the Shell Grant Program,
the Seniors' Health Insurance Program, and the book "Wildflowers on the Outer Banks:
Kitty Hawk to Cape Hatteras." The series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings,
booklets, pamphlets, flyers, write-ups, digital files, slides, photographs, and an
audio tape and transcripts. Materials date from 1970 to 2012 and undated.
Historical Note
The Dunes of Dare Garden Club was founded in 1967 and is fully affiliated with the
Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. and the National Council of State Garden Clubs,
Inc. The Club's main purpose is to provide a nonprofit, philanthropic and educational
association for the members and to encourage environmental improvement through civic
development, beautification and the protection and conservation of natural resources.
Early projects included the cleaning of an unlicensed local dump established in Nags
Head Woods, generating awareness of garbage can accountability and refuse shelters
along Highway 12, and landscaping the prayer garden adajacent to the popular ice cream
stand, the Circus Tent.
In 1980, the club published the book Wildflowers on the Outer Banks: Kitty Hawk to
Cape Hatteras. The book was begun in 1974 and was published by the University of North
Carolina Press. This collection includes the original sketches used in the book.
Today the Dunes of Dare Garden Club serves Dare County by providing information on
recycling and as a partner in the creation of the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching
Garden.
