Biographical/Historical

The League of Women Voters of Currituck County held its inaugural meeting 19 September 2006 at the Currituck County Library in Barco, North Carolina. The idea to form a Currituck County chapter grew from conversations at a 2005 event to honor elected women officials organized by the League of Women Voters of Dare County. The nonpartisan group's self-stated purpose was to "promote civic responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government and to act on selected governmental issues." It was an officially recognized regional chapter of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina. The Currituck County chapter hosted candidate forums, voter registration drives, and social events. In 2008, the chapter participated (along with the Dare County chapter) in a forum to solicit grassroots input on the League of Women Voters of North Carolina's official position on immigration in the United States. It also held an annual Women's Equality Day celebration. However, the chapter struggled to get off the ground, and suffered a steady decline in membership due to the complications presented by Currituck County's geography and disagreement among members about certain political positions held by the state organization. The Currituck County chapter disbanded in 2010, citing declining membership. Its last meeting was held 20 May 2010, and it officially ceased to exist on 30 June 2010.
