Biographical/Historical
Bruce Roberts and his wife, Cheryl Shelton-Roberts, founded the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society (OBLHS) in 1994. The society's mission is to aid in the preservation of the lighthouses and maritime history of North Carolina and to work with the National Park Service and other agencies, both government and non-profit groups, to achieve the safekeeping of the buildings, artifacts, and records of the United States Lighthouse Service (also historically referred to as the Lighthouse Establishment, Lighthouse Board, and Bureau of Lighthouses). The society has published two books on lighthouse keepers' families and assisted with several initiatives connected with extant North Carolina lighthouses, such as the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the transfer of ownership of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse to the Outer Banks Conservationists. As of 2020, the group still exists and meets regularly.
