Collection Overview
The Roanoke Island Woman's Club Records, 1930-2013, contains reports, correspondence,
clippings, certificates, bank statements, invoices, by-laws, minutes, publications,
photographs, yearbooks, and scrapbooks collected and produced by the Roanoke Island
Woman's Club over the course of its operations and through its various service projects
in the Outer Banks community. Materials are arranged into four series: Operational
Records, 1930-2012 and undated; Club Programs, 1940-2013 and undated; Publications,
1958-1978; and Yearbooks and Scrapbooks, 1940-1973.
The Roanoke Island Woman's Club was first chartered in 1927, and the organization
operated continuously afterwards. The Operational Records series contains four subseries.
The Annual Reports subseries contains materials collected for annual reports on the
operations of the club. These materials include individual department reports, officer's
reports, objectives and supplements, club proposals, and research materials collected
in support of proposals. The Financial Records subseries contains bank statements,
invoices, checks, receipts, donation records, and a treasury report related to the
general financial operations of the club, including specific projects such as scholarship
awards, the education fund, and the Roanoke Island Woman's Club Cookbook. The Administrative
Materials subseries contains records related to the everyday operations of the club,
including a constitution, meeting minutes, by-laws, rules, programs, convention materials,
member lists, and club-wide awards and certificates. The Communications subseries
contains materials sent to club members, including reports, invitations, and newsletters.
This subseries also contains general correspondence between the club and collaborators
on various projects, including a 1974 letter sent to actor Andy Griffith after his
donation of equipment, instruments and uniforms for the Manteo High School Band. Materials
date from 1930 to 2012.
A number of programs were initiated by the Roanoke Island Woman's Club after its organization,
including several community events and projects. The Club Programs series contains
two subseries. The Events subseries contains records and photographs documenting major
events hosted by the club, including trips, contests, a Golden Age Party for senior
citizens, and an Elizabethan Celebration for high school history students. The Community
Projects subseries contains records and photographs documenting major community projects
organized by the club, including most significantly the Dare County Library, a Youth
Recreation Center, the Roanoke Island Woman's Club Cookbook, and the Thanksgiving
Dinners for Dare County. All newspaper clippings are photocopies of the originals.
Materials date from 1940 to 2013.
Several publications recorded the Roanoke Island Woman's Club's projects and were
used by the club over the course of its operations. The Publications series contains
copies of The North Carolina Clubwoman, an organizational magazine for woman's clubs
throughout North Carolina. The series also contains copies of "Sweathog Digest," a
short, internal club publication reporting news about individual club members as well
as the club as a whole. Materials date from 1958 to 1978.
One ongoing project in the Roanoke Island Woman's Club was the annual production of
yearbooks and scrapbooks. The Yearbooks and Scrapbooks series contains yearbooks which
include by-laws, officer and member lists, pictures, and budget records, as well as
club slogans, litanies, and hymns. The series also contains scrapbooks which include
certificates, original newspaper clippings, and write-ups of major club events and
changes in the Outer Banks throughout the year. Also included in this series are materials
used in the preparation of yearbooks and scrapbooks, and documentation of yearbook
and scrapbook creation competitions. Materials date from 1940 to 1978.
