Abstract
Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women was chartered in 1978. The club is a
local organization division of the Business and Professional Women of North Carolina,
which is itself a state division of the Business and Professional Women of the United
States of America. The club has advocated for a number of women's issues since its
formation including pay equity and equal rights for women, as well as a number of
general issues such as small business interests, health care, Social Security, and
maintaining a work-life balance. The club also organizes local programming within
the Outer Banks to help women improve themselves academically and professionally.
The Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women Records, 1989-2013, includes correspondence,
administrative records, fund-raising information, club histories, meeting minutes,
and various publications including newsletters and scrapbooks.

Collection Overview
The Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women Records, 1989-2013, contains correspondence,
programs, membership records, by-laws, forms, notes, reports, responsibility guidelines,
invoices, procedures, protocol, certificates, directories, bank and budget statements,
sponsor and expenditure records, fund-raising information, club histories, meeting
minutes, handbooks, pamphlets, organizational charts, committee records, and various
publications including newsletters and scrapbooks. Materials are arranged into three
series: Organizational Records, 1991-2012, Club Programs, 1989-2013, and Club Publications,
1994-2001.
The Organizational Records series contains materials related to the administrative
and financial organization of Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women as well
as that of its state and nation-wide affiliates. The series contains two subseries.
The Administrative Records subseries contains by-laws, procedures, protocol, certificates,
directories, meeting minutes, handbooks, pamphlets, organizational charts, and committee
records. This subseries also contains compiled histories of the Virginia Dare Business
and Professional Women and its state and national affiliates, as well as membership
applications, forms, and lists. The Financial Records subseries contains correspondence,
invoices, dues records, bank and budget statements, sponsor and expenditure records,
and fund-raising information. This subseries also contains forms, notes, reports,
and responsibility guidelines for the club treasurer and financial chair. Materials
date from 1991 to 2012.
The club has been responsible for organizing a number of events and projects within
the Outer Banks community. Programs documented in the Club Programs series include
numerous symposiums; legislative efforts on the local, state, and national level;
working women's issues programming; women's physical and mental health programming;
scholarships for continuing education; individual development programming; club auctions;
a local Junior Talent Show for young girls; the Young Careerist Award; and the club's
Education Endowment Fund for the North Carolina Community Foundation. The series contains
correspondence, programs, booklets, handbooks, workbooks, invitation and guest lists,
event flyers, activity guides, and program criteria and other guidelines. Materials
date from 1989 to 2013.
Several publications recorded Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women's projects
and were used by the club over the course of its operations. The Publications series
contains several of these materials, including newsletters, scrapbooks, and the National
Business Woman Magazine. Materials date from 1994 to 2001.

Biographical/Historical
Like its national and state affiliates, Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women has advocated for a number of women's issues since its formation including pay equity and equal rights for women. It has also lent its support to a number of general issues such as small business interests, health care, Social Security, and maintaining a work-life balance. The club also organizes local programming within the Outer Banks to help women improve themselves academically and professionally. Major programs include several symposiums, most notably an annual women's symposium. The club also offers a scholarship for working women and those returning to the workforce, in order to help them pursue career-related further education and professional training. As of 2019, the club is still active.
