Collection Overview
The Outer Banks Woman's Club Records, 1971-2021, consists of yearbooks, scrapbooks, news clippings, photographs, and other papers created by the Outer Banks Woman's Club. Most of the materials in the collection consist of published or commemorative items created by the club's members; very few administrative records are present, with the exception of meeting minutes, for which there are a substantial amount documenting the club's activities from 2002 to 2014. Early records primarily consist of yearbooks and a scrapbook documenting the club's work to assist the People to Preserve Jockey's Ridge in establishing a state park at the Jockey's Ridge sand dune system. Otherwise, the bulk of the collection documents the group's activities from the 1990s to the 2020s.

Biographical/Historical
The Outer Banks Woman's Club was organized 10 February 1971. Its first president was
Mildred Hill. The group had 63 members and became a chartered member of the North
Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs in April of that year. From its formation, the
group considered conservation of natural resources to be one of its primary focuses,
and early events included beach cleanups, environmental lectures, poster contests,
and fundraisers in support of this goal. In the mid-1970s, the Outer Banks Woman's
Club played a major role in the People to Preserve Jockey's Ridge's campaign to convert
the Jockey's Ridge sand dune system into a state park. Every clubwoman participated
in the campaign, and the group logged over 2,400 volunteer hours in support of fundraising
and public awareness activities.
In addition to conservation work, the Outer Banks Woman's Club organized projects
to support the local elderly and youth populations. The group planned events, dinners,
and fundraisers for local disabled people and the various nonprofit organizations
that supported them, raised money for college scholarships and direct contributions
to the Dare County school system, and organized events such as fashion shows, variety
shows, and Monte Carlo nights. The women also strongly emphasized the arts in its
work, arranging art contests, quilt shows, senior citizen craft shows, and plays.
The Outer Banks Woman's Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, and as of February
2022, the group is still active.
