    Biographical/Historical

The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina issued dispensation for the creation of the French Broad Lodge on December 12, 1868. It was chartered the following year and in December 1870, a lot was purchased for a lodge building on Blannahasset Island in the French Broad River, adjacent to the town of Marshall. The Masons used the upper floor for meetings, while the lower floor served as a church.

This structure was damaged during the 1876 flood, and was moved from the island over to higher ground north of town. The church, Free Will Baptist, purchased the building in 1920. Meetings were then held above the drug store in Marshall until a new lodge was built.

In 1924, the Lodge purchased a lot at 63 South Main Street in downtown Marshall for the construction of a three-story building, measuring approximately 32 feet wide by 76 feet deep. It was financed through the issuing of stock in the Masonic Home Company, Inc., created by the French Broad Lodge to cover the business aspects of building the Temple.

Excavation began in November 1925 with W.H. Morrow overseeing the job. The new brick structure would measure 25 x 75. The first floor was rented out to a business; the second floor, a banquet hall available for public use; while the third floor was the Temple building used for Masonic and Order of the Eastern Star meetings. It was completed in the autumn of 1926 and is still in use by French Broad Lodge #292
