Biographical/Historical
In January, 1984, a group of 10 people met in Morganton in order to discuss forming
a Social Work Section of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association. Information
sharing and identifying commonalities were key reasons to organize such a group, along
with networking, skill building, and overcoming professional isolation.
On May 17, 1984 members of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association voted
to establish the Social Work Section at their annual convention. Goals of the Social
Work Section were:
To become more aware of how other social workers functioned within various health
agencies
To better define the role of social workers for health agencies
To improve standards for social work practice in health agencies
To provide a professional organization and support group for social workers
To provide opportunities for professional growth and development by sponsoring periodic
continuing education and training activities
Citing evidence of waning interest in participation and willingness to lead the organization,
the Social Work Section requested to be dissolved in August 2001.
