The North Carolina College Conference was organized in the early 1920s as an effort to solve some of the many problems confronting institutions of higher learning in the state. The conference's first meeting was held October 7, 1921. Membership was composed mainly of college presidents, with one additional representative from each campus, and several state government officials concerned with educational problems in North Carolina. The work of the Conference was carried out by various standing committees, each responsible for a particular area of interest. The committees were named according to their area of responsibility such as the Committee on Admissions, the Committee on Student Relationships, the Committee on Cooperative Research, etc.In 1933, the Director of Higher Education of the office of the U.S. Commissioner of Education began a survey of educational research throughout the nation. The presidents of the higher education associations in the various states were asked to head a Committee on Cooperative Research to conduct the survey in their states and to submit reports to Washington. Dr. Lillian Parker Wallace of Meredith College, then president of the North Carolina Higher Education Association, headed the North Carolina Committee. The work of the North Carolina Cooperative Research Committee was so successful that it was made a standing committee of the North Carolina College Conference with Dr. Wallace as its permanent secretary.Dr. Wallace continued as secretary of the N.C. Cooperative Research Committee until 1963. During this period, Dean James L. Godfrey of the University of North Carolina was chairman of the committee, and Fred V. Cahill of North Carolina State University was appointed secretary following Dr. Wallace's retirement. The following year, in 1964 Dr. Wallace was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities by North Carolina State University. In 1965, the Conference was reconstituted under a new constitution and by-laws as the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities. The assocation has continued to hold its annual conference in early November.
