Abstract

William Saunders (Wiley/Wilie) Clifton (ca. 1777-1847) married Elizabeth Alford around 1802. The couple settled in Franklin County and had several children, including Thomas Turner (T. T.) Clifton (ca. 1810-1882). Thomas, a farmer and a blacksmith, married Nancy Pippin, and the couple's children included John T. Clifton (1838-1901). John was a farmer and ran a general store along with his brother, Robert. The collection includes blacksmith, cotton, and store accounts of T. T. and John T. Clifton; estate papers of Wilie Clifton, 1848, including names of enslaved persons; Sophie Harriet Boyle's keepsake album, Civil War period; a broadside and letter to newspaper editor.

Collection Overview

The collection includes fourteen manuscript papers and seven manuscript volumes. There are blacksmith, cotton, and store accounts of T. T. and John T. Clifton; estate papers of Wilie (William Saunders) Clifton, who died in 1848; Sophie Harriet Boyle's keepsake album, Civil War period; an 1885 broadside and letter to newspaper editor. The keepsake album contains autographs of several officers and men of N.C. regiments encamped near Windsor, N.C. The estate papers of Wilie (William Saunders) Clifton include references to enslaved persons, including one page with first names and a mininum of general information regarding relative age, for example, "girl," "boy," "men."

William Saunders (Wiley/Wilie) Clifton (ca. 1777-1847) was probably born in North Carolina and married Elizabeth Alford (ca. 1780-1837) around 1802. The couple settled in Franklin County and had several children, including Thomas Turner (T. T.) Clifton (ca. 1810-1882). Thomas, a farmer and a blacksmith, married Nancy Pippin, and the couple's children included John T. Clifton (1838-1901) who owned a store. John T. Clifton was also a farmer in the Louisburg area.

John T. Clifton (ca. 1838-1901) was a farmer and store owner. He represented Franklin County in the House of Representatives, North Carolina General Assembly, 1885 and 1889. He did not serve in the 1887 General Assembly when Franklin County was represented by Nathaniel H. Macon and J. H. Williamson. Source: .
Biographical Note on Sophia Harriet Boyle:
Sophia Harriet Boyle was the owner of keepsake album, Civil War period. She was the daughter of Maria Plumbe and John McCauslen Boyle of Martin/Edgecombe counties. Sophia married B. G. Howell. Their daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Howell married Maurice Smith Clifton, a son of of Dr. James Beverly and Anne Rebecca Smith Clifton. Maurice and Margaret Elizabeth Howell Clifton were the parents of the collection donor, Sophia Clifton Wall (1913-2012).
