Collection Overview

This collection features two scripts from the fourth season premiere episode "The Hunting Party." The episode two-part episode aired in September, 1989 and was the first appearance of the character Conrad McMasters. McMasters, played by Conrad Gilyard, was a deputy sheriff on Roanoke Island, who leaves his job to work for Matlock as a private detective. Gilyard remained a series regular from 1989-1993. The show was set in, and filmed on, Roanoke Island, North Carolina and features many local residents in cameo apperances. The collection also features the story outlines of three more fourth season episodes: "The Clown," "The Reporter" (later re-named "The Ex"), and "The Con Man."

was a television legal drama set in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring Andy Griffith in the title role of Ben Matlock. Griffith, a long time resident of Manteo, North Carolina, was born and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina. One of Griffith's earliest roles was in , an outdoor symphonic drama still performed every summer on Roanoke Island. Griffith went on to star in a variety of movies, but he is best known for his television roles, first as Sheriff Andy Taylor in the and then as Ben Matlock. The show aired on NBC-TV from September 1986-May 1992, then on ABC-TV from November 1992-May 1995. The show revolves around Ben Matlock, a defense attorney, who solves cases and wins almost every case he takes to trial.

Throughout its nine season run, the show played host to a large number of both established and pre-fame stars. Some of the more notable guest appearances were from: Randy Travis, Dick Van Dyke, Jonathan Frakes, David Carradine, Jason Bateman, Hector Elizondo, Shaun Cassidy, Patricia Heaton, and Vivica A. Fox. The show also featured Don Knotts, Griffith's long time friend and former co-star, in a recurring role as Les Calhoun, a former client and Matlock's neighbor.
